CORRECTED VERSION: 610 rowers make a splash against breast cancer at Seattle Row for the Cure
SEATTLE – Six hundred ten rowers from 19 Seattle-area rowing clubs made a big splash in the fight against breast cancer Sunday morning at the 12th annual Row for the Cure regatta on Seattle’s Lake Union. The regatta is a benefit for the Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Seattle’s Pocock Rowing Center captured the overall regatta title, winning seven of the 34 five-and-a-half kilometer races on Lake Union. Last year’s winner, Sammamish Rowing Association along with the Seattle Rowing Center shared runner-up honors with five wins apiece. Lake Washington Rowing Club and Lake Union Crew shared third overall, finishing with four wins each.
Row for the Cure helped to kick-off October as Breast Cancer Awareness month in the Emerald City. Rowers and paddlers have already raised $57,000. Fundraising for the Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure continues through Nov. 1.
“The Row for the Cure has a long history of providing funds needed to support breast cancer screenings and treatment,” said Cheryl Shaw, executive director, Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “We are grateful to the many men and women who organized and participated in the event this year and the donors who help us bring much needed services to the community.”
Among the participants in the annual regatta were 137 high school aged rowers in four separate events. In the men’s junior eights, Seattle’s Pocock Rowing Center captured the event title, finishing in 19:36.4, outlasting Everett Rowing Association by just 5.1 seconds. Everett finished in 19:41.3, while Redmond’s Sammamish Rowing Assoc. was third in 19:54.7. Everett’s second entry was fourth, followed by Pocock’s second entry.
In the women’s junior eights, Sammamish finished in the top spot, edging Everett by just 5.2 seconds. Everett secured second place with a time of 21:27.3. Pocock was third in 22:30.5.
In the master’s events, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Anna Cummins and husband Bob Cummins rowing for Seattle’s Pocock Rowing Center captured the mixed masters double sculls title in 23:34.6. The two former US National Team rowers downed Seattle’s Lake Union Crew by 7.9 seconds.
In other masters rowing action on Lake Union, Pocock Rowing Center won the women’s masters eights, while Sammamish Rowing Association won the men’s masters eights.
The local breast cancer fundraiser has grown to become the largest benefit rowing regatta on the West Coast and is among the top third-party fundraisers of the Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. In partnership with USRowing and the George Pocock Rowing Foundation, the local regatta has raised over a half-million dollars for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and is among regattas in 16 states and Germany that have generated over $2 million for Komen affiliates.
Rowers are encouraged to contribute at least $150, the cost of a mammogram. Secure online donations to Susan G. Komen for the Cure through Row for the Cure can be made until Nov. 1 by visiting www.rowforthecure.com/seattle
