Jacksonville’s Row for the Cure was founded five years ago by Ted
Riedeburg, The Bolles Crew Coach, in memory of his mother. Joined by
Honorary Chairs Mike and Eileen Grebe, an eight-year breast cancer
survivor, along with over 700 rowers, spectators and survivors,
Riedeburg rowed for his mother once again.
“The 2008
Row for the Cure Jacksonville represented the very best of athleticism and
our youth,” said Sandy Silverstein, 2008 event chair. “Over two hundred
rowers, primarily of high-school age, gathered to raise these funds in the
fight against breast cancer. This event reached out in a very personal way
to many in our community who have been touched by breast cancer. Every boat
participating rowed in honor of, or in memory of someone who has faced this
disease.”
With 75 participants, The
Bolles School led the participating schools and clubs in this year’s Row
that included Jacksonville Rowing Club, Episcopal High School, Stanton
College Preparatory School, Riverbank Rowing Club and Jacksonville
University. The event included spectator boat rides, sessions on learning
how to land row, demonstrations on healthy cooking with the introduction of
the official “Row for the Cure Smoothie,” and yoga for breast cancer
survivors.
Kathy Frederick founded Row for the Cure nationally 15 years ago.
“Congratulations to the Jacksonville Row for the Cure for the fabulous
increase over last year’s fundraising. Your fivefold increase makes my
heart explode!” Frederick went on to say “I’m sure that that families and
patients in your community are delighted to hear how much you are helping
them in their battle against breast cancer.”
Up to 75 percent of the net income from the 5th Annual 2008 Row for the Cure
Jacksonville stays in the North Florida community to fund local breast
health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects. A
minimum of 25 percent of the net income from the Row supports the Susan G.
Komen for the Cure Grants Program, energizing science to find the cures.
“I am so proud of how the athletes, volunteers and corporate sponsors came
together in this fight,” said Silverstein. “Mostly, I am proud to be
associated with Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its promise to rid the world
of breast cancer. I encourage the citizens and corporations of Jacksonville
to learn more about this disease and get involved in next year’s Row. We
cannot thank everyone enough for their continued support of this unique and
worthwhile event.”
About Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do
everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise
became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer
movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots
network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives,
empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the
cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, we have invested
more than $1.2 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source
of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the
world. For more information about Susan G. Komen for the Cure, breast health
